What does decarbonization mean?

The term “decarbonization” refers to a process aimed at reducing carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions to zero, through advanced technologies, the use of renewable energy sources, the electrification of consumption, and the application of circular economy principles. It is a process that aims to convert an economic system into a sustainable model, with the goal of achieving zero emissions by the middle of this century.

OMIG’s commitment

OMIG has embarked on a decarbonization journey in collaboration with Schneider Electric to analyze its carbon footprint and plan activities to reduce its impact, following the international methodology of the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol.

The GHG Protocol provides an efficient methodology for identifying sources of greenhouse gas emissions and calculating the quantities of these emissions for a company. In this way, companies can quantitatively understand which activities and processes cause the most emissions and, consequently, take actions to reduce them.

Furthermore, the analysis is not limited to the company’s boundaries but can extend to the entire production chain to quantify the greenhouse gas emissions of the entire value chain, providing a comprehensive understanding of its impact and opportunities for improvement.

Renewable energy

OMIG’s path toward decarbonization has taken several directions, focusing on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, responsible resource consumption, and the implementation of more environmentally friendly production practices.
Among the key initiatives, OMIG has paid particular attention to renewable energy as a fundamental lever for reducing CO2 emissions.

The plant consists of 160 photovoltaic modules of 425 watts each delivering a total output of 68 kW.
The estimated annual energy produced by this plant is 75.04 MWh, which is a significant reduction in CO2 emissions compared to conventional energy sources.

Energy in motion

Another step towards the decarbonization process was taken with the installation of an electric vehicle charging station and the purchase of the first electric vehicle to renew OMIG’s fleet of vehicles.
